Katerina Charitou

Katerina is an associate lawyer with Pieters Cariolou LLC. She was called to the Cypriot Bar in 2007. She specializes in administrative, international protection and non-discrimination law, with special emphasis on disability rights and gender. She litigates human rights issues across a wide range of courts in Cyprus.

She is regularly instructed in cases involving human rights abuses by individuals and NGOs, including in proceedings introduced with the European Court of Human Rights and UN Committees (CRPD, CRC, CAT Committees) as well as UN Special Rapporteurs.

Previously, Katerina worked for ten years as legal officer at the Cypriot Ombudsman’ s Office. She was responsible for reporting systemic or ad hoc human rights violations in Cyprus and monitoring compliance with human rights standards for the European Union, the Council of Europe, and various UN Committees, including the UN Committee for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. She participated as a monitoring expert, in a number of legislative reform procedures including on the right to legal capacity, deinstitutionalization, protection from sexual harassment, accessibility and inclusive education. She also represented the Cyprus National Human Rights Institution, the Equality Body, the Independent Monitoring Mechanism for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the National Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture at United Nations, European Union, and Council of Europe level.

Katerina regularly conducts training sessions on human rights standards.
